Marcus Aurelius

Imperator Caesar Marcus Aurelius Antoninus Augustus headed the Roman empire (161–180 CE) and was one of the most respected emperors in Roman history. Marcus Aurelius was best known for his Meditations on Stoic philosophy. Aurelius had shown a deep interest in philosophy especially in Stoicism, an influence made by a stoic philosopher Epictetus. He grew up as a dedicated student learning Greek and Latin, his dedication and diligence at work were noticed by Emperor Hadrian. The emperor recognized him so well that later chose him as a successor to the throne.
