Maya Angelou

Maya Angelou was a civil-rights activist, poet, dancer, and an award-winning author for her memoir “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings”. Angelou’s tragic life started in her childhood when her parents separated and she and her brother were left under the care of their aunt in Arkansas. As an African American, she experienced racial discrimination in the state where she lived. The racial prejudices she experienced had motivated her to join in the civil rights movement and became good friends with Martin Luther King Jr.
